Matcha and lemons are a perfect pair. Their flavors may contrast with bitterness and acidity but the two come together perfectly with a bit of sweetness. Matcha lemonade on a Spring or summer day out and about is perfect. Opposed to most lemonades this recipe has a gentler tang. However, it’s still able to hold a prominent lemon flavor. Instead of acidic lemon face slaps, we’re going for a gentle lemon hug. Once the syrup is done, the drink comes together in no time.

Oleo Sacharum

This matcha lemonade packs a pretty lemony punch because it’s very similar to an oleo Saccharum. A syrup made from oils in citrus skin. By thinly slicing lemons were able to utilize those aromatic oils. Since we’re using thin lemon wheels, we get a bit of juice as well. Essentially the oils in the skin are pulled out from the sugar, creating a super aromatic syrup. Slicing and muddling the lemons gets us a sweet spot between tart and sweet.

Lemonade without the matcha

All that said, this drink is great without the matcha. The syrup, lemons, and drink itself are just creative mediums. If matcha isn’t your jam you can leave it out. Follow the same ratios and you have a tasty lemonade. Adding additional spices and herbs to the lemon syrup is another choice. Lavender, thyme, or ginger would all be great. One of my favorite things about this recipe is the sliced lemons. Great on salads or straight with the matcha lemonade. It’s a fun way to avoid waste in the kitchen.

Matcha lemonade inspiration

Two of the main inspirations for this post were peaceful cuisine and cafict. Both have very similar recipes to this and in my opinion, give a different perspective on lemonade itself. It can be warm, cold, sparkling, or even milky. Working on this recipe has widened my perspective of the term lemonade. Using the whole lemons is also a great concept. Not all lemonades have to be lip-puckering tart.
