Tea Toddy

First off, DO NOT consume alcohol unless you’re over the age of 21, and please DO NOT drive under the influence, drink responsibly. When it comes to drinks, hot toddy is one of my go to. It’s perfect for a cold winter night cap whether you’re out with friends or at home relaxing with Netflix. It’s also one of my staple drinks for when feeling under the weather. Traditionally it’s made just with hot water but I like to switch it up a bit and throw a bit of tea into the mix. Not everyone adds tea to their toddy but in my opinion it makes a big difference and brings a bit more fun into the drink. Pairing a nice tea with a  bit of whiskey in a cup makes for a relaxing drink to warm you up and breath easily. I once found myself downing 3 of these on one winter night a couple years ago. It’s just the perfect drink for the winter sniffles.

Recipe 

Ingredient 

water – 4 Oz (118g)

Black tea – 1 bag (2g)

Honey – 1 Tsp (10g)

Whiskey – 1 1/2 Oz (33g)

Lemon – 1/2 Oz (14g)

process 

  • Bring the water to roughly 200 degrees or a light simmer 
  • Pour the water atop the the tea in a brewing container 
  • allow the tea to steep for 3 minutes or until however strong you want it
  • Strain the tea into a drinking cup with the honey then stir to dissolve.
  • Add the whiskey add the whiskey and lemon juice and give the drink another few stirs then enjoy.

Tea 

I took a trip to my local tea shop for this recipe and got this really soothing vanilla black tea, you don’t have to do that though. I’ve made this with loads of different tea, usually whatever I have on hand. Oolong, rooibos, kukicha, are some good teas I’ve used for a toddy. They all have varying flavors so it’s fun to pair them with whiskeys too. I’d also suggest going for something caffeine free. Throwing caffeine in a soothing drink can be counterintuitive but that’s just me. If you aren’t a tea drinker or don’t like the flavor of tea you can completely omit it and keep the same ratios for everything. Tea in a hot toddy isn’t necessarily the standard practice but is something that I personally love to do with it. 

Whiskey 

This is what makes the toddy a toddy and there are loads of options to choose from. Bourbon, rye, scotch , Irish, the list goes on and  are really just the surface of choosing what to use. I personally don’t get really worked up about this part either. I’ll just look at what I got and go from there, but I will say monkey shoulder blended scotch really held me down for a while. So did Basil Hayden’s bourbon. It really just comes down to what you like. I’ve even used a coffee infused bourbon with a persimmon syrup and the toddy was fire. There’s more than just whiskey though. A bit of rum in here would be awesome. Nothing to crazy and funky like a Jamaican rum but a Cuban or Puerto Rican rum in a toddy would be phenomenal. You got options so pick your poison. 


A tea toddy is honestly great year round. It makes drinking tea a bit more adventures if I do say. I hope you can find some time to look through those cupboards and find the stuff to make a tea toddy. It’s great for a chilly evening or for a before bed nightcap.
