Mango Avocado Salad

Spread the love

Mangos are finally back in season! This is one of my favorite times of the year since I have a deep love for the fruit. They’re like juicy and sweet golden nuggets that drop from tropical trees for our consumption. According to the internet they’re the world’s most popular fruit and that’s a believable bit of info. Today I’ve got a bomb mango avocado salad for you whenever you get tired of eating them plain or making mango salsa. This salad is really refreshing and perfect for the warmer months of the year. It’s sweet, crisp, and refreshing, with a little bit of spice and Saltiness.

Recipe

Ingredients

Mango- 1 (128g)

Avocado- 1 (126g)

Cucumber- 1C (88g)

Green onion- 2 (24g)

Lime juice- 1 oz (26g)

Soy sauce-  4 tsp (8g)

Sesame seeds- 1 tbsp (8g)

Chili flakes- 1 tsp (1g)

Salt to taste

Procedure

  • Cut the avocado in half, scoop out the flesh then cut into half  inch cubes. Sprinkle with a pinch a salt then lightly mix with a spoon
  • Peel the skin from the mango, remove the fleshy ends from the seed, and cut into half  inch cubes. Cut the cucumber into quarter inch cubes. Clean the outer skin of the green onion and thinly slice into small thin rounds. Place all in a bowl with the avocado and lightly mix
  • Add  the soy sauce and lime juice and give the salad a firm mix until the liquids are fully incorporated. Season again if desired.
  • Place the salad into a serving vessel and garnish with the sesame seeds and chili flakes
  • Enjoy

Make sure that when you build the salad to season the avocado with a pinch of salt and give  it a light mix to start. This ensures that your avocados aren’t bland themselves and works as a flavor foundation for the salad. It may seem like overkill but trust me, it’s not, I promise. Once you toss everything in with the avocado you’re going to want to give the salad a stern mix. You’ll notice the lime juice and soy sauce pool at the bottom of the bowl but that’s going to be fixed. The more you mix the outer walls of the avocado will start to soften and mix with the lime and soy sauce making a dressing that coats everything in the bowl, however, Try to avoid breaking the avocado completely into smaller pieces. We want the agitation to lightly break up the outer walls of the avocado while still keeping them in rough chunks. We’re going for  a chunky salad vibe opposed to guacamole. Another little important note is that you don’t necessarily need to season the salad at the end. I know I said season to taste but everyone has different taste buds. Soy sauce is basically liquid sodium so be careful and don’t over do it. If you need a bit more of a flavor booster a little half splash of soy will work, or even a skosh of fish sauce if you’re feeling edgy.

Mangos

I’m not sure if I said this already but I’ve got a deep love for mangos. They’re probably the fruit I eat the most in the spring and summer. It’s hard not to buy a bunch of them when they’re on sale too, so enticing. The Couple of times I’ve been to Florida I was always amazed with the variety of mangoes in markets and to my surprise, corner stores. I almost hopped my air bnb fence to grab some of the neighbors mangos from their tree, but I composed myself. The mangos weren’t that important. Once or twice a year I’ll just order a box of tropical mangos to satiate my fix. It may be a bit pricey but so worth it. There are some awesome companies shipping tropical fruits around the globe. I usually go to Fruits N’ Rootz for my tropical fruit needs. I’ve always had the best of service ordering from them and the work they do in DR Congo is amazing.  I’ve also heard awesome things about Miami Fruit too. The tricky part is making sure you order from these companies  when the fruit you want is in season, especially the mangos. Fruitz N’ Rootz will send you at least 3 different types of mangos with their mango sampler box which is great because you can have this salad with more than 3 different mangos.

There are a plethora of mangos on the market and the ones you have access to will mainly depend on where you live. I’ve been in the northern parts of the U.S my whole life so I Usually only have 2 to 3 options, but I’ve already shared my way of getting around that .When shopping at my local grocery stores I typically go for adolfo mangos. They’re the yellow ones that have a slimmer profile and aren’t too large. One of my favorite things about these mangos are the texture. They’re juicy and soft with an almost pudding-like texture that still keeps a bit of its dignity while being chewed. These ones are less stringy than the tommy atkins variety that you usually find at most supermarkets. Those are the larger ones with green and reddish skin. If you live in a more tropical area with access to loads of mango varieties go wild. It’s always fun to experiment with different fruit and flavors they provide. I’m always surprised at the varieties of mangoes I’ll get in a tropical box, most of which I have no idea what variety they are.

Easy summer salad

That being said, I make this salad all the time. It’s perfect for when you have that one mango that’s starting to get a little too soft but still has decent texture. Even if there are ingredients missing it’s so easy to substitute some things or omit others that aren’t in the fridge. A few knife cuts and you have a fresh and light salad. The recipe is also pretty simple to scale up if you want to make a larger batch. If you can catch a mango and avocado sale even better. One of the cool things about this salad is that you can buy the ingredients a few days ahead of time and let them ripen for a few days until you’re ready to make the salad. I do this all the time when planning out lunches with avocados. Avocado, mango, lime and cucumber are all super refreshing ingredients and with the warmer months started this salad is great for an outside barbeque or picnic. Nothing beets sitting out in the sun with loved ones and refreshing lunch.

I hope I convinced you to get out and grab some mangos in these warm months. They’re such a tasty fruit with some much flavor potential and variety. Just mixing them with lime or lemon is a treat if I’m being completely honest. Thanks for taking the time to read through this post and enjoy your day and mango avocado salads.
